Abstract：Using Geographic Information System (GIS) as an analyzing tool, characteristics, reasons and mechanism of settlement's spatial distribution in Loess Plateau are studied quantitatively. The results shows that the spatial distribution features of settlement in Loess Plateau is random, and the leading factor of deciding the settlement's spatial distribution in Loess Plateau is terrain. In addition, the historical factor has some degree effects on the settlement's spatial distribution of the region. The author thinks that locational factors and economic factors should be thought much of in building town system in Loess Plateau.
